Starting a children’s home has been a long-held dream in our hearts! Even before our church was officially registered years ago, this vision was already close to the core members of our Church. We desired to do something for God and society. Now, we have taken a big step forward. Through recent fundraising, we have secured some of the necessary funds, and we have found a property well-suited for a children’s home. The owner has graciously agreed to sell it to us at a fair price. We have begun discussions with relevant government agencies, and we are grateful for the experienced professionals from the children’s care sector who are offering their support to help establish and operate this home. Children are the future of society, filled with potential and capable of creating endless possibilities; our nation’s policies emphasize love and protection for children.
From a faith perspective, while humanity is affected by sin, everyone has the potential to shine under God’s grace. We believe that people have an innate love for goodness, and that goodness can be shared and grown through daily interactions. Our vision for this children’s home is not only to care for lives but to transform lives, allowing goodness to flourish. Providing day-to-day care will be essential, yet when a person feels valued, respected, and safe, they begin to believe in their own capacity to do good, fostering mutual help and support.
Recently, I read a book titled After the War: From Auschwitz to Ambleside. It recounts the story of a group of children, survivors of Auschwitz, who were brought to Ambleside in the UK to live temporarily after World War II. They arrived deeply affected, full of fear, distrust, and self-protective behaviors like stealing and hiding food. However, after spending time with kind, compassionate, and understanding locals, they transformed. They went from eating with their hands and hiding food to waiting to eat together, apologizing, appreciating nature, and socializing like children again. This change came simply by living together with others who showed them love and acceptance.
The book reflects on how the Nazis once attempted to strip these children of their humanity. Yet it asks: was it only the Nazis who sought to rob people of their inner light? Misfortune and hardship are not limited to the battlefield; they exist around us every day. Still, we must hold on to the belief that goodness has power. Therefore, I call on all those who share this vision and values to keep an eye on the progress of our children’s home, so that, together, we can unleash the transformative influence of goodness. As a pastor, I urge all believers to continue loving others through our Lord.
“Test all things; hold fast what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21, NKJV)
開辦兒童家舍,是我們的心願!這心願早已在數年前,教會還未成功註冊,己經是教會的核心成員,想為神、為社群去做的一件事。現在已經邁進一大步了。我們在早前的籌款中,已籌到一定資金;我們又尋找到適合成為兒童家舍的物業,而業主也樂意用合理價錢,賣給我們。我們隨即向有關政府部門接觸。我們也多謝兒童家舍業內有資歷的人士樂意襄助,參與開辦和運作這兒童家舍。兒童是社會的將來,他們擁有無窮的潛力,和能夠創造萬千的機會;本國的政策都是對兒童愛護有加的。
從信仰的角度來看,人縱然受罪的污染,但所有人在神恩典之下,都有發光發熱的可能性。我們亦相信,人內心愛慕良善,而良善也能透過生活交流而互相感染。我們希望所開辦的兒童家舍,不僅僅是一項事業,更能以生命影響生命,讓良善在其中能發展。生活的照顧,固然是家舍重要的工作,但當人感到別人想自己好,和自己被尊重,安全感就產生,感到自己也有行善的力量,去互相幫助。
近來看一本書《大戰之後—由奧斯威辛至安布賽德》,講述一群孩子,二次大戰後,由波蘭奧斯威辛集中營,被安置在英國安布賽德的屋邨短暫生活。他們由一群充滿恐懼、自我保護、不信任,偷竊等的狀況,因著與體諒、慷慨、規律、接納的英國本地人一起生活一段短時間,他們由用手吃食,懼怕制服人士,一有機會就收藏食物用品,回復成為一群等待一切安排好才一起吃飯,會道歉,享受天然環境,有社交能力的孩子。只要與他們一起過生活,他們就會明白,就會更好!
書中提到:納粹曾一度想令他們成為動物。或者,動物才有這樣的心腸吧!然而,令人失去本有光輝的,何止是納粹呢?不幸亦不單存在於戰場,也在你與我身邊。然而,我們要相信美善仍有能力。故此我呼籲,若有同樣心願和價值觀的人們,留意我們這兒童家舍或有一天成立,與我們一起發揮美善的影響力。我作為牧師的,更呼籲信徒,靠著我們的神,繼續去愛人。

We all know that judging right from wrong is a challenging task. The field of ethics is diverse and multifarious. Therefore, in a knowledge-based society, determining right from wrong is not an easy feat.
A recent incident has sparked discussions. A new immigrant, Ezedi, with a record of sexual offences, claimed to have converted to Christianity, stating that he would face death if he returned to his home country. The immigration department overturned the decision of the interior ministry and granted political asylum to this individual. Subsequently, he committed even more horrifying crimes by splashing corrosive liquid on a mother and her two daughters, causing harm to those who came to their aid. The behaviour is outrageous!
Many online comments have criticized the immigration department's screening standards, and some have pointed fingers at Christianity, suggesting that it easily shelters wrongdoing. Reports also indicate that many questions whether converting to Christianity should be advantageous in seeking asylum, as if after professing faith, crimes should receive special treatment, exempt from accountability. These remarks undoubtedly put the church in an embarrassing position.
Should converting to Christianity increase the chances of applying for political asylum? This is a dilemma. There are indeed countries that persecute Christians. If a person genuinely turns to the Lord and flees such a country, should they receive protection in a Christian nation? I believe this is not a difficult question to answer. However, the devil is in the details.
As in the case of Ezedi, authorities made judgments based on collected information. There were pastors who testified to his conversion, but after the incident, reporters asked Ezedi's neighbours, who claimed he was a devout and law-abiding believer but not a Christian. The former immigration minister also mentioned that some asylum seekers are helped or even incited by well-intentioned but naive pastors. In this way, the initially correct policy is exploited by malicious individuals. Of course, whether Ezedi falls into the category of pastors mentioned or if he successfully concealed his true nature from the pastors remains uncertain. However, it does prompt reflection for those who believe that Christianity is all about love and that love can change everything.
The God of Christianity is a God of love but also of justice and severity. God does not show favouritism to those who belong to Him. Even if God's servants like David and Moses committed sins, the punishment imposed by God did not diminish. The Reformed faith believes that Christians are only those who repent and receive grace but are still sinners, not perfect, and still need others to watch over them. Paul strongly demands that believers be sincere in their salvation and not accept the misuse of forgiveness to continue in sin (see Romans 6).
In this era that extols freedom, believers should connect with each other. While valuing privacy, there should also be a concerted effort to deepen mutual understanding. It is certainly good for the church to have close-knit relationships where members enjoy a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood. However, one should not close the gate of the sheepfold, preventing other sheep from entering the circle.
There is a Chines proverb: 'Mend the fold after the sheep are lost.' (better late than never) Even good systems require people to use them properly to achieve the correct results. Hopefully, the flaws revealed by this tragic event will awaken more people to the need for a balance between love and justice, friendship, and the public interest.
我們都知道去裁定對錯,是很難的事。坊間的倫理學,也是五花八門的。所以當我們判斷對錯時,在知識型社會中,很不容易。
近來的一件事引起討論。一個有性犯罪記錄的新移民Ezedi,聲稱自己歸信基督教,若回到自己國家後,會被處死。移民局就推翻內政部的決定,給予這人政治庇護。及後,他犯更可怕的案,用腐蝕液體撥向三母女,並傷及救助的人。行為令人髮指!
不少網上言論,都針對移民局的審查標準,亦有一些劍指基督教容易包庇罪惡。報導更指很多人質疑轉信基督教,應否有利於申請庇護。好像人信主之後,犯罪也得到特別待遇,罪惡不應追究似的。這些言論無疑令教會尷尬。
轉信基督教應否增加申請政治庇護的機會呢?這是兩難的問題。現時的確有國邦逼迫基督徒的。若一個真心歸主的人,逃離自己這樣的國家,他應否得到基督教國家的庇佑?相信這不難回答的。可是魔鬼常在細節裡。
正如在Ezedi的個案中,當局栽定前有搜集資料。有牧者證明他歸信了,但記者事發之後,問Ezedi的鄰居,卻說他是虔誠、守條例的教徒,但不是基督教。前移民部長亦說,有庇護申請者,是被善意但天真的牧者幫助甚至教唆。這樣,本來正確的政策,被可惡的人利用了。當然,Ezedi是上述這類的牧者引致,還是Ezedi隱藏得好,牧者察覺不到?我們不能確定,但的確令一些迷信基督教只有愛,愛絕對能改變一切的人去反省。
基督教的神有愛,但亦是公義、嚴厲的。神不優待屬祂的人。就算神的僕人大衛和摩西犯罪,神施行的懲罰並沒有減輕。改革宗的信仰,認為基督徒只是悔改而蒙恩者,但仍是罪人,並不完美,仍需要別人監察。保羅強烈要求信徒要對救恩真誠,絕不接受人利用寬恕去繼續犯罪(參:羅6章)
在這高舉自由的時代,信徒彼此要有連繫;大家講究私隱之餘,也當同心走向互相更深認識。教會有熟悉人,享受如同弟兄姊妹的情宜當然好,但不要將羊欄門關上,其他羊進不到圈子。
華人有一成語:亡羊補牢。好的制度仍須要人妥善使用,才能發揮正確功效。希望這慘劇顯示出的漏洞,令更多人醒覺愛與公義,情誼與公眾利益,要有一定平衡。

21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. (1 Th 5:21)
The word "hold" originally means to "prevent," "hinder," or "possess." It can also be translated as "preserve." Imagine a wine enthusiast at a sale, knowing that good wine is hard to find. If they taste something delicious, they wouldn't hesitate to make a reservation. Delaying it and being found out later would lead to regrets.
Good affairs, things and people are meant to be treasured, or they slip away. Even things we've had for years can be lost if we don't keep them carefully. This includes our youthful energy, curiosity, imperfect but unforgettable companions, and even talents we've neglected. Many people think this is just a part of life, but I believe it's a true reflection of many people, the good thing is not something they should quickly give up.
Recently, I watched the documentary "BECKHAM" on a streaming platform. (To be honest, I'm not a football fan, so I don't know much about him.) His mistake, at the age of 24, broke the nation's heart. He faced widespread ridicule and insults every day. If he had given up and to conform to public opinion, it would have been a common outcome. Despite support from Sir Ferguson and his teammates, what hurt him the most was his self-doubt. However, what's truly remarkable is not only his football skills , but that he held onto his passion for playing football. Some say it's because he had strong mental qualities, but those assessments usually come after the fact, aren’t they? What about a mother who considers herself weak and timid but rushes to save her child when her child’s life is threatened? How would you evaluate her mental qualities?
Life moves fast, and we should take some time to think about what's worth preserving. We should hold onto what we can, and things that have lasting value and meaning. The curiosity when we were young? The attitude to challenge yourself? Or the “never surrender”attitude of Churchill, or the sacrificial spirit of Mrs. Godiva? These qualities could be in us who just mediocrity . Don't keep them locked in a statue; but keep them alive in your daily life and bless those around you.
Finally, let's talk about someone who's been trending online recently and she is growing in the face of adversity, Chloe Pomfret. She comes from a broken family, kicked out of home by her alcoholic father, and at 16 she was homeless. Her only support, her grandfather, passed away early. Despite this, she held onto her future and fought for a chance to get into Oxford University. While she was only enrolled by the school with benefits, her grades surpassed many. Her academic abilities might not be the best, but if "overcoming adversity" were a subject, she would be a Ph.D. in that. What's important is that she, despite her below-average circumstances, she didn't give up on determination and hope for good things. Of course, having supportive and loving people around you is crucial. When such people and acts become more common in a community, it builds a society that's kind and full of vitality. And each one of you can be a part of it.
21 但凡事要察驗:美善的事要持守,(帖前5.21)
「持守」這字的原意,有「防止」、「隱藏」「管有」等的意味。或者中文翻譯作「保存」會比較貼切。我們可以想像其情境,就好像一位名酒採購者走進展銷會中,深知好酒難求;若嚐到美味,就會毫不猶豫地落訂金。若遲延又被行家發現,就後悔莫及了。
好的事、物、人,都是要珍惜的,不然,他們會溜走的。就算有些事物已經擁有多年,也會因為沒有好好守住而流走。好像,年輕時的體魄、對事物的好奇感、非完美但忘不了的伴侶,甚至放下了的天賦才華。很多人都覺得,這是人生中自然的事。可是我只認為這是很多人的寫照,其實人是不應快快就放棄自己覺得美好的事。
近來筆者在串流平台中,看了「碧咸傳」Beckham(坦白說,我不算是足球迷,對他的事一知半解。)錯誤的一腳令全國人心破碎,當年他只是24歲。之後每天迎著他的,是舖天蓋地的嘲笑和粗言。就算他順應民意而放棄,是正常的劇本。雖然有費格遜的維護,及隊員們的見義勇為,但傷透的乃是他的自己。可是事情最後,令人刮目相看的,除了是他的球技,更是他守住要踢足球的心志。有說:是的,因為他有很好的心理質素。只是,有關心理質素的評價,總是事後才提出的。是嗎?平時自覺軟弱膽怯的媽媽,眼見她的嬰孩受生命威脅時,就撲去救他。她的心理質素如何?
生活怱怱,我們當用一點時間,去想想有什麼是值得保存的。保存我們能守住的,且有長久價值和意義的。少年的好奇心?挑戰自己的態度?或是邱吉爾的永不言敗,甚至戈黛娃夫人的犧牲精神?平凡的你與我可能都有過。不要讓它們封存在銅像裡,而應保持在生活中,以致令周圍的人得祝福。
最後想談及一位近來網上被熱搜,但卻無人想像迎難而上地成長的Chloe Pomfret。破碎家庭、酗酒又趕走自己的父親, 16歲以街為家,唯一接納她的爺爺卻提早離世。她卻守住自己的將來,爭取牛津大學入學機會。雖然最後只是被恩恤入學,但成績已比很多人好。她讀書的素質未必最高,但,若然「逆境人生」是學科之一,他己經是這科的哲學博士了。重點是,低於平凡的她,沒有因際遇而放棄毅力、盼望這些美善的事。當然,在周圍有一樣堅持美善、友愛之人們的援手,也是很重要的。這樣的人,這樣的事在社群裡增多,就構成是美善、有活力的社會。而且,你們每位也可以是主角。

Why are we named LCC (Life of Christ Church)? Of course, we hope this community can manifest the life of Jesus Christ. But what makes it so important that, among the many good aspects of Christianity, we have chosen this as our Church name?
To earn a degree of Missiology today, one must accumulate many credits. However, in the early Church, there were no formal study opportunities, yet she experienced astonishing growth. There were three reasons for this achievement:
First, they were persecuted and forced to leave their home without careful planning (Acts 11:19).
Second, the invisible hand of God was with them (Acts 11:21).
Third, the scattered believers at the time left a distinct impression on people—they were always manifesting Christ, leading to the name "Christians" (Acts 11:26). Whether this term was meant as praise or criticism at the time, their lives had a tremendous impact!
The crucial influence of missions is that believers not only receive but also live out the life of Christ. This attracts the attention and conversion of many, and it makes them to be good neighbours, bringing blessings of righteousness and goodness to the community. Paul said, "For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 3:11). All believers on earth must build on this foundation, or will not endure in the end. The journey of faith for believers is also a journey of learning Christ (Eph 4:20-24), in which they can experience abundance (Col 2:9-10; John 10:10) and live out the life of Christ in today's circumstances. Therefore, we are eager to study the Bible, to rightly handle the word of truth (2 Tim 2:15), lead people to know God, enabling ourselves to live well, glorify God, and benefit others. Moreover, we carry this goodness and righteousness with us, bringing it near and far, moisten the hearts.
點解我們名為LCC(Life of Christ Church)?當然我們希望這群體,能彰顯耶穌基督的生命;可是這有什麼重要,以致在基督教眾多的美事中,我們會選取這個成為教會名稱呢?
今天若要修畢一個宣教學學位,要修讀不少學分,但初期教會並沒有研習機會,卻有驚人的發展。事情成就原因有三:
一、是被當權者逼迫,未有精密的策劃就要離去。(徒11:19)
二、神無形的手亦與他們同在(徒11:21)。
三、當時四散的信徒,給人群鮮明的印象,就是他們總是彰顯基督,由此𧗠生出「基督徒」這名稱。(徒11:26)無論當時這詞的意思是褒還是貶,但這生命實在是帶著巨大的影響力!
宣教重要的影響力,就是信徒得著又活出基督的生命,就吸引萬人留意、歸向;及成為別人的好鄰舍,給群眾帶來正義、美善的祝福。
保羅說過:基督是教會的根基,除此以外,沒有別的根基。(林前3:11)地上的教會信眾都必須在這根基上建立;不然最後也存留不了。信徒所行的信仰路程,也是學習基督,(弗4:20-24)在其中可經歷到豐盛;(西2:9-10;約10:10)在今天的處境活現基督的人生。故此,我們會樂於研習經文,找出正意(提後2:15),從而讓人認識神,也讓自己活得好,榮神益人;甚至將這美善、正義隨腳蹤,帶去近處和遠處,潤澤人心田。

From serving in Hong Kong to the United Kingdom, from the comfort zone to the uncharted realms, we all gracious believers are not only dreamers but also doers. Through God's grace, the work that He has initiated in the UK has gradually unfolded, step by step. The needs of the community are vast, and for now, we do not confine our ideas; instead, we are letting various information, individuals, and situations spark our creativity, enriching ourselves and daring to overcome challenges.
Some brethren are planning to work in eateries, learning food preparation and understanding the community; others have already been working in children’s homes in the UK, caring for the neglected young generation. At the same time, we are actively equipping ourselves in various areas such as language, driving, health, and bible study, to make ourselves better neighbours and to enable mutual assistance within the community, bringing glory to God and benefit to people!
由香港走到英國事奉,由安穩去到未知的國度,蒙恩的信徒是做夢者,但更是踐行者。藉着神的恩典,英國為祂開拓的工作,一步一步向前探索,已經開展了。人群的需要很大,因此我們暫時未限制自己的構思,就讓不同的資訊、各式的人與事作腦震盪,先去充實自己,也嘗試突破挑戰。
有弟兄計劃在食肆工作,學習預備食物及了解社區;有的弟兄姊妹更已在英國的家舍工作,學習照顧失愛的新生代;另外我們也積極裝備自己,在語文、駕駛,健康、硏經等各範疇上努力學習,以致讓自己更能夠做個好鄰舍,更能讓人群互相幫助,榮神益人!

I came across sad news about an incident in Coventry. It made me think about a series of obvious or hidden tragedies.
An 18-year-old drove his car aggressively into another man, around 30 years old, with whom he had a prior dispute. We can't fully understand their conflict, but even though, life can be very complicated, leading to such unfortunate events.
The person who got hit by the car is suffering the most. Although he didn't lose his life, he was seriously injured. It's expected that his friends or family are deeply worried, sad, and angry. Even after rushing to the hospital, it's hard for them to ease their anxiety and sorrow.
Beyond the news, there's another sorrowful aspect, concerning the young person who committed the crime. He's going to lose his freedom for six years, which is a fair punishment. But who is born with the desire to harm others so seriously? Committing a crime is unquestionably wrong, but who would believe someone who claims to find joy in it, with such bitterness in his heart? People prone to losing control can create significant problems in society, but ultimately, they harm themselves the most.
I believe every person in Coventry feels something when they read this news. Some might say that every place has its problems, “Is it worth discussing such incidents?”. Or should some just focus on their own lives, following the Chinese saying, "It's not my concern, so I don't need to worry"? “While I may not be able to change anything?” “Not engaging in criminal activities is already a form of help, isn't it?” But are these issues truly unrelated to us?
Even as someone new to Coventry, I'm aware that young people in the city can sometimes act recklessly, which leaves me somewhat disheartened. There are undoubtedly various factors behind this incident, such as family issues, societal problems, security concerns, or educational challenges. However, when Jesus was in the world and encountered a man who was blind from birth, his disciples wanted to discuss complex philosophical and theological questions about the man's condition. Yet, Jesus took the most practical approach: he healed the man's eyes.
Coventry was once considered the second most dangerous place in Europe. While some may argue about this statement, is it acceptable to turn a blind eye to it? Statistics show that over 40% of the population in Coventry is Christian. Can't we pray more for Coventry and consider what we can do to address these crime issues?
看到迎來Coventry 的一則令人傷感的新聞。令我想起一連串明顯或隱藏的悲劇。
一位18歲的少年駕車,狠狠地撞向另一位年約30,早前曾與之有爭執的男士。我們無法了解他們的過節,就算了解,人生有多問題,都如死結。
最明顯痛苦的是被車撞傷的人,雖然未至死亡,但傷勢也不淺。他的朋友或是他的家人的憂心、傷心和忿怒,也預料到。雖趕到醫院,亦難以平伏那份焦急和傷感吧。
然而,新聞以外,容易隱藏叫人傷心的範疇,應還有犯罪這方的青年人,攻擊人的要失去6年自由,這是罪有應得的,但有誰是天生殺人狂呢?犯罪是責無旁貸的,但心中苦毒得要大開殺戒的人,告訴你他做這事很開心,有誰會相信呢?容易失控的人,在社會中會產生很多問題,但他們先是將自己的頭衝向石牆的人。
還有高城的每個成員,看到這則新聞,相信也有一點感受。或者有人說,每個地方總有她的問題。這樣的事值得一提嗎?或者有的認為無閑理會別人,好像中國人的一句話:事不關己,己不勞心。我什麼都不是,能改變到什呢?我沒有犯事,已經是一種幫助吧!可是這些事,真的與自己無關嗎?
連我這個初到貴境的人,知道在同一城下有青年人可以這麼衝動,也會感到有點黯然。這事背後固然有各樣問題。家庭?社會?治安?教育?但耶穌在世時,遇到一先天失明的人,門徒只想研究一些理學問題,一位天生瞎子,有什麼神學因由。耶穌卻做最實在的事:醫好他的眼睛。
早前高城被稱為歐洲第二危險地方。雖然有人認為值得商榷的,但視而不見又正常嗎?按統計高城有超過40%的基督徒。我們可否多為高城罪案禱告,和想想有什麼可以做呢?

As the blessed disciples who have just arrived in the UK, we are filled with hope to glorify Jesus Christ. Besides planning for the traditional religious activities, what else can we do to show the virtues of Christ as well as effectively benefit the community?
Perhaps it would be meaningful for us to establish a social enterprise that can reach out to people and serve the community. Of course, this is quite a bold idea. But God sent us to this place, it is natural that he allows us to dream about it.
作為蒙恩的信徒初到英國 貴境,我們滿心期盼能榮耀基督;但除了傳統的信仰活動之外,我們還可以有什麼方式,能讓基督的美德綻放,能實效地有益於社群呢?
或許是我們能開辦一間,能接觸居民,服務人群的社會企業,應是有意思的事。當然,這是頗為大膽的意念,然而神讓我們到這地方,為這地方有夢想,也是理所當然的。
